Dear Brian's parents,

Brian worked very hard on his weekly test during today's lesson. He achieved a mark of 73% (B-).

I would Brian to independently complete this weekly test for homework and to focus on careful understanding of question instructions and vocabulary comprehension (the use of his translator is encouraged).

Dear Brian's parents,

Brian had a very good English language lesson today, eventhough he was very hungry, which distracted him throughout the lesson. His hunger negatively effects the retention of knowledge being taught and therefore, his overall learning success during the lesson is compromised.

Brian's parents: for Brian's learning success, can he please come to his English language lessons already fed and ready to learn. This will significantly and positively impact his learning outcomes and increase the likelihood of his knowledge retention success. Thank you very much.

For today's lesson, we covered: Lesson  24 - U4W3 - Feb 08 - In Class/Homework - Weekly Test.

We focused on the following literacy concepts and test-taking strategies:

1) Key / New Vocabulary: translations and synonyms

2) Reading strategies: context clues and comprehension

3) Test Questions strategies: understand ALL the vocabulary in the Question and in the Answer Choices (use his translator).

4) Context Clue Translation: if Brian does not understand the 'word' that he is trying to translate (due to multiple meanings or the Chinese translation is challenging), he should translate the words around the 'word' (phrase translation) or the entire sentence (sentence translation). This will usually provide Context to the 'word' for easier comprehension.

For HOMEWORK, can Brian please independently complete the following weekly test:

Lesson  24 - U4W3 - Feb 08 - In Class/Homework - Weekly Test

*** Brian is encouraged to use his Chinese-English translator throughout the test, to understand ALL the vocabulary on the test.

Thank you.

Dear Brian's parents,

It was very nice to see Brian (and his mother) once again. He is growing up my goodness! He looks like he has gotten taller which I am sure is very exciting for him.

For today's lesson, (Lesson 21 - U4W2 - Jan 18 - In Class/Homework - Weekly Test), I focused on diagnostically assessing Brian's English language proficiency, in the following three language components: listening, speaking, and reading. The fourth component, writing/grammar, I will diagnostically assess with his weekly test homework submission. It is very important that Brian completes his homework, independently, and with access to an English-Chinese translator. Thank you.

For HOMEWORK, can Brian please independently complete the following:

Lesson 21 - U4W2 - Jan 18 - In Class/Homework - Weekly Test

***It would be best if this homework was printed out and Brian could answer test questions directly onto the paper print out and then submit for assessment.

Thank you.

Once again, it was very nice to teach Brian again. He is a joy to teach.

Have a wonderful Chinese New Year celebration and I look forward to hearing all about the festivities from Brian, next Wednesday.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Note:  reread this reading and finish phonics next week.  This reading was difficult enough for all the students to justify 2 weeks.

Dear Brian's parents,

Brian engaged and participated well throughout today's English language lesson. Once he began to remember his teacher's expectations of him, he became more independent in his work, especially when translating.

Unfortunately, Brian did not complete his homework for this week so his teacher needed to reteach some of the lesson curriculum from last week. This is because he did not reinforce his learning by homework completion, which is crucial for a low level beginner of English language learning. With one hour per week lessons, homework is a vital learning activity.

I would recommend that Brian consistently completes his weekly homework to reinforce his learning from lesson to lesson. He only has a one hour English lesson per week, which makes it very difficult for him to retain the knowledge learned. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

For today's lesson (Lesson 2 - Task 1 - U3L2 - May 27 - 'Kate Saves the Date'), we covered the following literacy concepts:

1) Pre-reading strategies

- Author

- Illustrator

- Title

- Date Awareness

- Picture Comprehension: "What do you see?"

- Details in Sentence Frames

- Noun & Adjective Identification

2) Genre: Fantasy

3) Reading strategies

4) New Vocabulary
