Lesson Plan, Unit 2, Lesson 15

Review all of the animal poems with Ryan, starting with "The Sandpiper"

Have Ryan summarize "Bat" in his own words--help him use details from the poem to explain point of view

Identify what type of poem "The Grasshopper Springs" is for understanding of genre--help Ryan point out and identify elements that tell the form of the poem

Identify rhyming pattern in "Bat" for understanding of rhyme scheme--point out the change in the second stanza

Identify the metaphor in "Fireflies ar Dusk" and have Ryan exolain why the poet makes this comparison for understanding

Discuss with Ryan how the poem"The Sandpiper" would be different if it were written from the sandpiper's point of view for understanding

Discuss how these animals inspired the writers for understanding and what other animals could inspire writers to make connections

Read "Fog" and "White Cat Winter" and discuss how the poets compare the weather conditions to animals for understanding

Discuss how fog and winter are like a cat to make connections

Discuss with Ryan how the writers creative comparisons helped him visualize an animal for fluency and understanding

Review Meter and Rhyme then answer questions on the Deer poem for understanding

Review Simile and Metaphor then answer the questions in Figurative Language for understanding

Complete Suffixes/Contractions A&B. Explain for understanding before completing

Explain evidence and have Ryan write a paragraph about the Nautilus poem with topic sentence, evidence, concluding statement.  Assist for understanding.

Explain word choice and have Ryan revise the Draft Model with precise language. Assist for understanding.

-Ryan was able to read the vocabulary words and sentences with some assistance

-understands meaning of unfamiliar words with some explanation

-was able to understand metaphor, simile, rhyme and meter with teacher explanation

-read animal poems aloud; Ryan was able to identify poetic devices with some teacher assistance

-understands first and third person point of view and clue words

-understands difference between lyric and haiku poetry
