Dear Chloe's parents,
Chloe is such a creative and intelligent girl. She was very excited to tell me about and show me, a comic book she was creating, with 45 characters! Incredible! This is an excellent method to teach creative writing using story boards (comic panels) and illustrations (text features) that very effectively enrich a 'story'. Truly a positive and productive way to 'grow' her English language proficiency in many different and effective learning pathways. Chloe had an excellent overall lesson as well. I am very proud of her English language progress.
For today's lesson, we reviewed Chloe's homework as well as her Anchor Chart binders. We also covered Lesson 8 - Task 1 - U3L6 - In Class - City Communities.
We focused on the following literacy concepts and strategies:
1) Pre-reading strategies: prediction, identification, text-to-self and text-to-world connections
2) Key/New vocabulary - translations, definitions, and synonyms
3) Reading strategies: context clues, fluency, decoding, text features, and comprehension
4) Genre: Narrative Nonfiction
5) Text Features: captions, photographs, and table of contents (author, title, subtitles, chapters, pages, and sometimes illustrator)
6) Synonyms and Antonyms
7) Paragraph Writing: Topic, Detail, and Concluding sentences
